2005 BHWF Grants

The Berwick Health and Wellness Fund awarded new grants totaling $1.1 million in 2005. In addition, the foundation is paying out multi-year grants in 2005, including the Berwick Public Library and  the Nurse-Family Partnership.

The foundation awarded 98 new grants to more than 40 different non-profit organizations. Some of the grants were approved through the foundation's annual grant review process in which organizations receive an open opportunity to apply for grants. Other awards were made through a strategic process that targeted particular goals of the foundation.

In determining which grants to award, the grant-making committee looks at the major goal areas in addition to factors such as the organization's ability to measure outcomes and the future sustainability of the project.

Following is a list of the organizations and the grants they have been awarded in 2005.

• American Cancer Society – $1,000 for Relay for Life sponsorship; $1,000 for Telethon sponsorship; $175 for Daffodil Days; $75 for Basket of Hope

• American Heart Association - $1,000 for Heart Walk sponsorship

• American Red Cross - $4,000 to help families relocate after Flat Iron fire; $200 general fund

• Berwick Area Chamber of Commerce - $492 for Walking Berwick

• Berwick Area Ministerium - $3,000 for heating fuel aid

• Benton Area School District - $4,570 for Book Buddies; $4,400 for reading improvement project

• Berwick Area School District - $6,480 for READY (early reading) kits; $2,044 for Body World Exhibit; $1,500 for senior citizen Thanksgiving dinner; $1,500 for senior citizen tech

• Berwick Area United Way - $7,000 for community needs assessment; $500 general fund

• Berwick Area YMCA - $250 general fund

• Berwick Public Library - $400,000 for new library capital campaign; $1,500 general fund

• Beyond Violence - $15,000 for operating expenses; $5,000 for technical assistance; $3,000 for written analysis; $200 for yearly membership

• Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble - $8,000 for Theatre in Class; $125 general fund

• Bloomsburg University Community Racial Equity Task Force - $1,000 for diversity conference

• Catholic Social Services of Wyoming Valley - $15,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters; $100 for Bowl-a-thon sponsorship

• Central Columbia School District - $800 for Dance Revolution program

• Central PA Food Bank - $2,500 for food distribution

• Central PA Forum for the Future - $3,000 for Youth Leadership Camp

• Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit - -$3,457 for facilitator; $2,000 for LPN training

• Columbia Child Development Program - $6,047 for mental health initiative; $4,272 for car seat restraints; $4,245 for Second Step training program

• Columbia County Commissioners - $8,000 for Communities That Care program

• Columbia County Communities That Care - $4,500 for festival

• Columbia County Department of EMS - $1,034 for AED

• Columbia County Housing Corporation - $75,000 for multi-use facility construction

• Columbia-Montour Family Health, Inc. - $100 for SCORE

• Columbia-Montour Home Health/VNA - $111,000 for Nurse-Family Partnership program; $1,500 End of Life options

• Columbia-Montour Women’s Conference - $1,000 for conference

• Columbia-Montour Boy Scouts - $25,000 for kitchen renovations; $3,150 general fund; $2000 for Learning for Life program

• Community Dispute Resolution Board - $5,000 for program start-up

• Council on Foundations - $3,150 for membership dues

• Dental Health Clinic - $34,000 for operating expenses; $3,476 for dentist search

• EOS Therapeutic Riding Center - $1,500 for rider subsidies

• Family Health Council of Central PA - $120,000 for children’s health initiative

• Fernwood Music Camp/Hazleton Philharmonic - $5,000 for facility improvement

• Free Clinic for under and uninsured - $2,000 for planning feasibility

• Geisinger Health Systems Foundation - $15,000 for child advocacy program

• Geisinger Medical Center/Division of Psychiatry - $15,000 mental health services in Berwick Area School District

• Grantmakers in Health - $2,250 to be a funding partner

• Huntington Mills PTO - $10,000 for playground equipment

• Kings College - $6,500 for environmental assessment

• MS Society Central PA Chapter - $1,000 for client assistance

• Nicholas Wolff Foundation - $12,233 for Camp Victory

• Northwest Area Quarterback Club - $2,500 for well at athletic fields

• Northwest Area School District - $21,100 for equipment and fitness/nutrition program; $18,750 for Jump Start program

• Rainbow Hill School - $3,000 for early childhood staff training; $1,000 general fund

• Saint Columba Church - $1,200 for food cupboard

• Salvation Army - $4,000 for soup kitchen; $400 general fund

• Setebaid Services, Inc. - $12,255 for camperships

• Special Olympics, Columbia Montour - $1,500 for sports training equipment

• Union Township Recreation Planning Group - $10,000 for planning grant

• United Way of Wyoming Valley - $300 for professional seminar

• Valley Emergency Ambulance Association - $3,000 for AED

• Volunteer Fire Companies - $3,000 offered to each company in the Berwick Health and Wellness Fund service area, $43,205 distributed to 15 companies

• Women’s Center of Columbia -Montour, Inc. - $10,000 for computer equipment

Youth Philanthropy Grants:

• Northwest Area School District - $2,000 for diversity awareness program

• Hunlock Creek Elementary - $1750 for playground equipment

• Northwest Area Quarterback Club - $1,250 for well at athletic fields

• Berwick Area High School - $1,500 for diversity awareness program

• Columbia Montour Family Health - $1,500 for teen pregnancy prevention program

• Borough of Berwick - $1,000 for summer concert series

• Central PA Youth Ministries - $1,000 for youth center
